It’s a great decision to hire a photographer to document this important event. It will allow you to be in the moment and enjoy the celebration while trusting you will have beautiful photographs to remember the occasion in years to come. Many families who have hired me do so repeatedly. Each time they add to their family.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of hiring a baptism photographer and answer some common questions parents often have.

Why Hire a Professional Baptism Photographer?

A baptism is more than just another event; it’s an important step in shaping your child’s faith. You want to be present with your family and friends, not busy taking photos. A professional photographer has the experience to capture the emotions, details, and candid moments that make this day unforgettable. From the candid moments during the blessing to the professionally posed group portraits with family, a professional can ensure these memories are beautifully documented.

Common Questions About Hiring a Baptism Photographer

1. What should I look for in a baptism photographer?

When choosing a baptism photographer, consider their experience with religious ceremonies. There’s only one chance to capture the ceremony, and you want someone you can trust. Look at their website to see if their style aligns with your vision. Read Google reviews and testimonials from previous clients. It’s also a great idea to call them. You’ll get a sense of their customer service and if this is someone you want to work with.

2. How much does a baptism photographer cost?

The cost of a baptism photographer can vary based on location, experience, and the package you choose. It’s important to discuss your budget and what’s included in the package, such as the number of edited photos, the length of the shoot, and any additional services. My service is $499 for the ceremony with all the digital images. Some clients decide to add photos at the home and reception, as well as wall art or albums.

3. How should I prepare for the photo session?

Preparation is key to ensuring a smooth photo session. Here are a few tips:

  • Coordinate Outfits: Choose outfits that complement each other without clashing. Avoid anything with busy patterns.
  • Communicate with the Photographer: Share important details about the ceremony, such as key moments you want captured and any specific traditions.
  • Check with the priest: Let your priest know you are hiring a professional photographer to document the ceremony and ensure photography is allowed. I was once hired to capture a baptism, and the priest did not allow ANY photography. I tried to capture a photo with a long lens from the back of the church without flash, and he called me out in front of the entire congregation.

4. What moments should be captured during a baptism?

A professional baptism photographer will know which moments to capture, including:

  • The Blessing: The baptism ceremony, with either the pouring of water or immersion.
  • Family and Godparents: posed group photos with the family, godparents, and close relatives.
  • Candid Moments: candid moments of interactions and emotions as they happen.
  • Details: Close-ups of details like the baptismal gown, candles, and shoes.

5. How long should the photography session be?

A typical baptism photography session lasts about an hour if we are only at the church covering the ceremony and a short period before and after for additional photos.

6. Can we include a photo session at home or a reception?

Absolutely! Many families extend the photography session to include getting ready for shots at home or reception. This adds a personal touch and provides a comprehensive story of the day. If you add in the home, I allocate 40 mins for photos plus travel time to the church. And if you add the reception we typically go straight there to capture all the details you’ve spent time planning to make the venue beautiful and the occasion special. When you arrive we take some photos with the family and cake then leave before everyone sits for dinner.
