Professional Headshots For Lawyers: Key Benefits and What to Expect

I recently photographed a young lawyer who understood the importance of having a professional headshot. When we spoke, I also asked him if he had a website, and he shared that he was having one built. So I asked to see it. I wanted to create images that would seamlessly integrate and communicate a strong, cohesive brand voice. Whether it’s for your firm’s website, LinkedIn profile, or marketing materials, a professional headshot can significantly enhance your brand and convey the message you want it to, to potential clients. Below, I’ll explain why professional headshots are essential for lawyers, answer common questions about booking a session, and explain the benefits of investing in quality photography.

The Importance of Professional Headshots for Lawyers

We all make judgments about one another, either consciously or subconsciously. So we know that first impressions matter. And if you’re a lawyer, they can be crucial. A professional headshot isn’t just a photo of you; it’s a powerful element of your brand. It can communicate a lot, and you should control what it’s communicating. Likely, you want it to convey professionalism, confidence, and approachability. When potential clients or colleagues search for you online, your headshot is often the first thing they see. A high-quality image can set you apart from competitors and build trust with your audience.

My recent client, J. Kalirai understood this. Here are a few images we captured for his new website.

On the right, you’ll find a screenshot of Mr. Kalirai’s website, yourcriminallawyer.ca. Notice how he effectively utilizes his images to enhance his site. Click on the image to the right to explore his full website. You’ll see that his site features a strong, dark color palette. If I had captured him with bright and airy images it would not have aligned with his brand’s aesthetic or message.

Common Questions Lawyers Have About Booking a Headshot Session

What should I wear for my headshot?

Choosing the right attire is key to a professional headshot. I send my clients some inspiration and typically recommend they bring in a few options for us to select together. Overall I recommend opting for solid colors and classic styles that reflect your profession. It’s best to avoid busy patterns or overly casual or wrinkled clothing. Something that’s often overlooked is fit. Clothing that is too tight or too loose is distracting and looks sloppy. For lawyers, I would recommend a well-fitted suit or business attire as the best choice.

How should I prepare for the session?

Preparation is crucial for a successful headshot session. To begin with, get a good night’s sleep, stay hydrated, and avoid any new skincare treatments right before the shoot. If a haircut if you need one a week or two before as well as a a color touch-up if you dye your hair. Facial hair should be clean and neat. Or shaved if you typically don’t have facial hair.

How long does a headshot session take?

I don’t time my sessions. My goal is to capture what I know you need and will be thrilled with. A typical headshot session lasts about anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the number of outfits and settings you choose. This allows enough time for wardrobe changes, different poses, and ensuring you get the perfect shot.

What is the cost of a professional headshot session?

Prices can vary based on how many images you order. My starting session is $490. Clients often come to me after having gone to other photographers and being disappointed with the results. As a result, my clients are always amazed at how hard it is to select their favorites, as they often like so many of the images we create. It’s an investment that they see immense value in. However, don’t take my word for it! You can read some of my client’s reviews HERE.

Can I get multiple headshots in one session?

Absolutely. During your session, we’ll capture a variety of poses and possibly outfits. After your session, we’ll review your images together and I’ll help you make the best choices. This is when you’ll decide how many images you’d like to have.
